ORIGINALS
Jean works mostly in soft pastels, but also paints in oils, and uses fine black graphites and Prismacolor pencils for her drawings. She prefers pastels because of their richness and saturation of color. Pastels are the purest medium because they are basically pure ground pigments rolled and compressed into sticks, with the barest minimum of clay particle binder to hold them together. Paints, on the other hand, have oils or other liquids that the pigments are suspended in, which can make subtle differences in the tints and shades of colors. Jean uses two types of papers for her pastels: sanded papers for a rich, velvety appearance, or rag drawing papers for a smoother finish. Jean does not spray a fixative on her pastels, preferring to leave them in their pristine velvety state. She does not use "quick dryers" in her oils, and top coats each one with a finish of Damar varnish for protection. All of her works are framed to exacting standards of acid-free conservation framing.
